We have just got the Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM Lens! This lens is apparently one of those MUST use lenses. It is unofficially dubbed The Lord of the Red Rings (the red ring indicating Canon’s top range of lenses in case you wondered) due to it’s unbeatable sharpness, fine detail, super fast autofocus and smooth bokeh (background blur).  The wide aperture allows us to shoot in very low light which we frequently have to for wedding photography in dimly lit churches or venues. It also provides you with the ability to fully isolate the subject from the background.

We knew the Canon 135mm f/2.0 L would make a fantastic addition to our stable and we can’t wait to get out using it properly!

According to Ken Rockwell’s post on the Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L Lens:

“One of Canon’s best lenses, the 135/2 L has superb optics in a compact package with great ergonomics and immediate autofocus. Lenses like these simply aren’t available for Nikon, which is why so many professional photographers prefer Canon cameras. All of Nikon’s 135mm lenses have goofy autofocus controls.”

(Just to cover myself) I’m not slating Nikon’s at all. I know plenty of amazing photographers who shoot Nikon and I use a D2X with macro lens on a regular basis for product photography.

You can read what Ken Rockwell has to say (including all the technical info) on the Canon 135mm f/2.0 lens but basically it’s awesome and we can’t wait to do some proper shooting with it and get used to this great bit of kit!

On first use I can concur what Ken says about the quality of it. It’s solid. It feels like it means business but this is something you come to expect from L-Series lenses.  It includes a lens hood to help with contrast and isn’t too heavy weighing in at 1.7637lb (I weighed it… #geek). It feels well balanced on both our full frame and crop cameras crop and as a juicy bonus when using on the cropped 60D gives a focal range of 212mm! The focus has constant manual override and the focus ring is smooth and well dampened. The bokeh is awesome and the Auto focus is super fast! When you grab the lens to shoot everything is where it needs to be – the focus distance and the AF/MF switches are right under your thumb. In fact the only downside of it is it has a plastic filter thread…I can live with that.

Here’s some shots from today briefly before I had to get down to a load of work and then a couple from earlier this evening. I’ve not had the chance to properly flex the aperture so only played at f4 and f2 but you can see how insanely sharp it is!
